SATURN RETURN

21.06 – 29.07.2017

A solo exhibition by Kirsten Sims

Kirsten Sims’s solo shows are an expression of where she is in her life. At the time of her first solo show, Middle of Nowhere, she had graduated from her Honours degree and left Stellenbosch to move to Cape Town. With her first solo show behind her, You Are Here marked a period of making a home in Cape Town and becoming more established in her career. Like every four years in our calendar, Leap Year was a deviation from the norm existing as an online exhibition at a time she felt an urge to experiment with exhibition formats. In the year she turns 30, Kirsten presents Saturn Return.

The planet Saturn takes 29,5 years to orbit the sun and return to the place in the sky that it occupied at the time of one’s birth. The Saturn Return is the astrological period that occurs in a person’s late twenties as they move into full adulthood in their thirties. It’s known to be a time of tumultuous transition and self-reflection. The show Saturn Return is inspired by this phenomenon and characterises a progression in Kirsten’s art and process. The body of work stems from a place of self-knowing, and materialises with a confidence to test new techniques and colours; to make marks boldy. As a whole the works are bigger. Kirsten plays with scale both in terms of canvas size and the subjects within the frame: a giant rug is hung from a wall looming over a string of tiny people that walk beneath it; people at an art exhibition are engulfed in flecks of abstract red paint that have left the frame.

As ever in Kirsten’s paintings, place is significant in Saturn Return: both recognisable (a European cafe scene, a public swimming pool in Sea Point) and imagined. In some works natural landscapes show an absence or hint of human activity and in other works her signature characters fill the scene in a flurry of interaction and fashion at a soiree or garden party. Each gives the distinct feeling that you have been here, or felt this, before.

TURBINE ART FAIR 2017

13 – 16.07.2107

BOOTH # GH14 | TURBINE ART FAIR

The Turbine Art Fair has established itself as a significant event on the SA Arts Calendar, presenting rare and crucial opportunities to Collectors and Artists alike. This Fair has won us over through its fantastic electric atmosphere, its high level of organization, and most notably in remaining absolutely committed to its intention to promote emerging talent and to nurture a new collectors base, ideas which resonate greatly with the core philosophy of our gallery.

Since its inception in 2008, Salon Ninety One has served as a platform for both emerging and established South African artists of all disciplines to gain exposure through sharing their creativity and vision. The Artists exhibiting with Salon Ninety One have all excelled in their respective fields, with their names quickly gaining recognition across South Africa and abroad. This year we are proud to be representing Andrew Sutherland, Black Koki, Cathy Layzell, Heidi Fourie, Jordan Sweke, Kirsten Beets, Kirsten Sims, Linsey Levendall, Paul Senyol and Zarah Cassim. These Artists embody the gallery’s signature style and reflect the astounding growth and promise of local talent.

Salon Ninety One will be exhibiting at the Turbine Art Fair, for the fourth consecutive year bringing accessible, affordable contemporary art from Cape Town to both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers in Johannesburg. Visit us at Booth GH14, Turbine Hall from the 13th to the 16th of July 2017. Please call 021-424-6930 for further information.

LEAP YEAR

19.10.201

leap-year-type

An online exhibition by Kirsten Sims

Leap Year is an exhibition as sneaky as the name suggests.

Leap years squeeze an extra day into every fourth year and in the same way this exhibition is a way of squeezing an extra body of work into 2016. We do things a bit differently during leap years and the many traditions and festivities surrounding the extra day are indicative of that. Many leap year legends are centered on women being ‘allowed’ to do things they usually weren’t supposed to; like proposing marriage and asking men to dance at parties. So because 2016 is a leap year, in the spirit of doing things differently this show is going to take place exclusively online. I wanted to make my paintings accessible to viewers who don’t necessarily live in Cape Town and can’t physically be at the opening.

As usual the themes in my work are as varied as the weather and my mood, ranging from skinny-dipping to sunsets and shindigs.

Come have a digital dance with me.

– Kirsten Sims. October 2016. Cape Town. South Africa –

Due to a growing International collectorship and demand for Kirsten Sims’ artworks – reaching from Cape Town South Africa as far and wide as Australia, Canada, Mexico, The United States, Germany, Hong Kong, England, Russia, Holland and France – it is was with great pleasure that we presented an exhibition of Artworks that was sold exclusively online and accessible to both South African and International audiences.

On behalf of Salon Ninety One and Kirsten Sims, we would like to thank you for your support and enthusiasm, which has not only inspired this wonderful collection, but has challenged us to operate in new and exciting ways.

YOU ARE HERE

30.03 -23.04.2016

A solo exhibition by Kirsten Sims

’You Are Here’ is a visual quest for space and a desire to go on imaginary adventures to find the place between being lost and found. This body of work is both an exploration of narrative on a larger format and an investigation of how abstract mark making can be combined with figurative story telling. Telling stories on a larger scale feels overwhelming and exciting and that feeling is what I want to investigate with this exhibition. Using old magazines, personal photographs and the infinite rabbit holes of the Internet as my points of departure I explore the landscapes and stories from the area ‘where the pin drops’. As always my focus is on people, places, parties, palms and pets…

I’D RATHER BE SWIMMING

01.12.12 – 26.01.2013

‘I‘d Rather Be Swimming’ End of year Group Salon in association with the  I AM WATER ocean conservation trust, featuring some Salon91 favourites as well as some fresh all-new local talent.

As passionate Ocean lovers, I AM WATER, founded by champion freediver Hanli Prinsloo, strives to share the joy aquatic with as wide an audience as possible. With the help of Salon 91 water will once again take centre stage, as it should! We are all Water, and we all share the opportunity and challenge to protect our last wilderness beneath the waves. The I am Water Ocean Conservation Trust aims to do this through education and awareness, spreading the love and protection of the oceans through introducing South Africans from all walks of life to the ocean environment & important conservation issues.

Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe, best known for her beautiful swimmer sculptures, which were installed at the Sea Point Promenade until recently, will be the guest speaker at the opening.

Salon91 &  I AM WATER will be hosting a beach clean up on Sunday the 20th of January 2013 at 10:00 am. We would love for the Salon91 community & everyone who appreciates nature, art or the ocean to get involved. Please contact us on info@salon91.co.za if you would like to help out.

Kirsten Sims

Artist Kirsten Sims (b.1987) completed a BA in Applied Design at the Stellenbosch Academy (2011) and completed her Honours degree in Illustration at Stellenbosch University (2014). She lives and works in Cape Town but the vista she has painted most is the ocean view from her family home in Mossel Bay. Kirsten’s philosophy in life and art is “one thing leads to another”. Her own path has led to editorial and commercial illustration projects; solo shows in Cape Town and Toronto; inclusions in numerous art fairs and group exhibitions; and a published children’s picture book. Through her painting Kirsten seeks connection; to communicate the way she sees the world. Her work has a strong narrative quality and is often animated by a sartorial crowd of characters. She just as naturally replaces the theatre of human interaction with the drama of a natural landscape. Whether familiar or imagined, place plays an important role in her work.

Upcoming Shows: FNB Joburg Art Fair with Salon91. Selected Projects & Exhibitions: 2017 – Saturn Return, a solo exhibition at Salon91; Turbine Art Fair with Salon91; Cape Town Art Fair with Salon91. 2016 – The Spirit of Irma, a group show at the Irma Stern Museum; Oracle, an end-of-year group exhibition, Salon91; Leap Year, an online exhibition with Salon91; You Are Here, a solo exhibition at Salon91. 2015 – The Middle of Nowhere, a solo exhibition at Salon91; Middle of Nowhere, Canadian Edition, a solo exhibition at the Alison Milne Gallery, Toronto, Canada. 2014 – Paper is You II group exhibition at Salon91. 2013 – Aurora, all-female illustration group exhibition at Salon91; Emerging Creative at Design Indaba. 2012 – A Drawing a Day, online exhibit where a new illustration was posted to the artist’s blog daily.
