A HAZY SHADE OF WINTER

A Hazy Shade of Winter is a salon-style group show including works by represented, associated, and exciting new artists. The group exhibition inspired by the Simon and Garfunkel song of the same name, seeks to explore subject matters, palettes, and imagery which capture and express the varied emotions, colours, memories, and atmosphere, which this season brings. For some artists, winter evokes icy vistas, cool palettes of blues and whites, and the change to colder and shorter days. For others, the changing season elicits a longing for warmer times, the comfort of staying indoors close to the fire, the use of warm and jewel tones, and the desire to capture nature in full bloom.

Winter provides a milestone for the passage of time through the year. For many, 2020 has felt somewhat surreal; time has moved on and the seasons have changed and yet there is a feeling that normal life was a lifetime ago.

Throughout the collection, the viewer is invited to contemplate the artists’ relationship with the season of winter and how something as simple as a change in weather can have a profound impact on the kinds of work they produce.

SALON NINETY ONE End-of-year salon-style group show in aid of True North

Accessible, affordable artwork across a broad range of mediums by some of Salon Ninety One’s favourite emerging and established creatives. This year our Gallery and Exhibiting Artists will be donating ten percent of all artwork sales to the True North Organisation. Spoil yourself or a loved one with that special one-of-a-kind artwork and make a difference to the life of someone much younger and less fortunate. True North is a non-profit organisation that is pioneering Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiatives within marginalised communities.The historical lack of adequate provisioning of basic services to poor communities manifests itself within all spheres of society, ultimately resulting in a vast loss of human potential. The long-term ripple effects of inequality includes increased rates of unemployment, disease, substance abuse and the fragmentation of family units, and unfortunately young children are the most at risk. An incredible developmental window of opportunity exists within these early years, and it rapidly diminishes with age. This potential for growth into a “whole” person is not limited to academic development, but encompasses every part of the child’s world. As we celebrate ten wonderful years of Salon Ninety One, we recognise the light, love and hard work that has gone into building the True North organisation since 2007. Join Salon91 and our generous young artists this festive season in our quest to give the Vrygrond community and the youth of our country a brighter future.

An exploration of transience, process, and surface

Group exhibition featuring Georgina Berens, Amber Moir, Natasha Norman and Gabrielle Raaff.

 

“Amber Moir, Natasha Norman and Gabrielle Raaff have each visited Japan, while Georgina Berens spent some time in Finland. Quite clearly their experiences in these places have left an indelible mark on all of their practices.

While Japan and Finland are worlds apart, there is some commonality. In many ways, the two represent respectively the eastern- and northernmost reaches of human settlement. In these extremes, as much by necessity as by practice, human culture is closely bound by and deeply immersed in the elements and seasons, in their states and cycles.

Amongst all four of these artists is insistence on the transitory over the permanent, and on process over result. And there is a shared concern with surface, even where imagery comes to the fore, in all of their work. Importantly, there is also something intangible, elusive, something that resists a definitive conclusion in all of the results. This, I would contend, represents in part each artist’s response to the above-mentioned environments.”

SALON NINETY ONE end-of-year group show in aid of the Peninsula School Feeding Association | Saturday 02 December at 11AM | 91 Kloof Street, Gardens, Cape Town

This year, 10% of all sales will go towards the Peninsula School Feeding Association and the many children they support.

Hungry children struggle to concentrate and the deficits of under-nutrition becomes irreversible if not addressed. The Peninsula School Feeding Association provides breakfasts and lunches to 27 270 hungry learners at a total of 160 educational institutions across the Western Cape. These meals provide regular balanced nutrition across all food groups as well as incentive to attend school and to help children focus on their studies. Doors open at 11AM with an opening address by S A Guide-Dogs Association at 11:30. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to interact with Guide Dog Owners and their dogs, as well as Puppy Raisers with their puppies in training.

South African Guide-Dogs Association provides Independence, Mobility and Companionship to the differently abled community of South Africa by providing Guide, Service and Autism Support Dogs. Ten percent of all art sales will be put towards the sponsorship and training of guide dog puppies.

ABOUT:
Paper Is You III is an exclusively paper-based exhibition, which focuses on the diversity and richness of paper as artistic medium. This is the third instalment in a range of exhibitions by the same name which have been hosted by Salon91 since 2011, titled after a poem written by artists Wessel Snyman and Katrine Claassens (who have both exhibited at the gallery). All too often art is is only considered ‘Art’ when it is an oil on canvas piece. Paper Is You challenges this preconception and celebrates the magic of paper-based artwork in all its forms and applications, as well as the incredible ways in which this carefully selected group of artists engage with this age-old medium, working both within and against the confines of the medium. There will be individual works by all of the participating artists on view, as well as collaborative artworks.

Dear Art Lovers & Collectors,

As we reach the end of another year we would like to thank you for your loyal support, patronage & enthusiasm.

According to our annual tradition, 2015 concludes with a salon-style exhibition featuring accessible, affordable artwork across a broad range of mediums by some of Salon Ninety One’s favourite emerging and established local creatives. The exhibition is scheduled to run until the last week of January 2016. Artworks will be rotated regularly & after the opening day, works may be taken home on the day of purchase, so come treat yourself & your loved ones!

This year we will be supporting The Bookery (www.thebookery.org.za). The gallery & artists will be donating 10% of all sales towards building a library & running a creative workshop with the kids at Usasazo Secondary School in Khayelitsha. Everyone is invited to donate books – specifically Xhosa & Afrikaans language, as well as Art-related books.

Please join us on Saturday the 5th of December from 11am until 3pm for our final exhibition of 2015. It is going to be a festive day of STELLAR art, sweet treats by the lovely artist/baker Alice Toich, beer by Leopold7 and so much more…

Night Watch – A solo exhibition of recent paintings by Gabrielle Raaff.

Working with the ephemeral qualities of watercolour and ink, Raaff explores certain spatial conditions of figurative and architectural form within the urban realm. Her latest works see a return to oil and a more intuitive, visceral exploration of the internal landscape of the subconscious.

CAPE TOWN ART FAIR 2013

The fair presents a great selection of emerging and established local art and bridges the divide between art and design. The CT Art fair will have a wonderfully positive impact on the Cape Town Art scene itself and will certainly heighten international awareness, regard and interest in Cape Town and our wealth of creative talent.

Over 40 galleries and 130 artists will be exhibiting work from the full spectrum of media. Wanted Business Day Magazine will be presenting an installation of new video works, curated by Gary Cotterell, featuring some of SA’s most exciting contemporary artists namely; Mikhael Subotzky, Haroon Gunn-Salie, Barend de Wet, Khanyisile Mgongwe, Kudzanai Chiurai and Cameron Platter. Cape Town curator and critic, Andrew Lamprecht will be curating the featured artist space. Land and environmental artist Strijdom Van Der Merwe has been commissioned to make a site-specific work for the fair and the list goes on.

Group Show – Various Media – Emerging Artists – Salon91

Artists have been challenged by the gallery to create anew / submit a masterpiece that they believe to be a truly once-off original, successful, archetypal example of their practice, which answers to the theme and title phrase ‘One in a Million’. Each artist will only submit one piece. The artists have really let their imaginations run wild with interpretations ranging from ideas around authenticity, rarity, preciousness, love, the night sky, fleeting moments, intricacy, endangered species, statistics & formulas, to the use of sparkly materials / precious metals within their work. Viewers will be presented with what could essentially be a one-in-a-million opportunity to collect a seminal work by an emerging artist.

The exhibition will open on the 26th of June at 18h30.
‘One in a Million’ will feature one work per artist.
Expect to see sculpture, painting, drawing, typography, digitally created works & more …Not to be missed!

I’D RATHER BE SWIMMING

‘I‘d Rather Be Swimming’ End of year Group Salon in association with the  I AM WATER ocean conservation trust, featuring some Salon91 favourites as well as some fresh all-new local talent.

As passionate Ocean lovers, I AM WATER, founded by champion freediver Hanli Prinsloo, strives to share the joy aquatic with as wide an audience as possible. With the help of Salon 91 water will once again take centre stage, as it should! We are all Water, and we all share the opportunity and challenge to protect our last wilderness beneath the waves. The I am Water Ocean Conservation Trust aims to do this through education and awareness, spreading the love and protection of the oceans through introducing South Africans from all walks of life to the ocean environment & important conservation issues.

Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe, best known for her beautiful swimmer sculptures, which were installed at the Sea Point Promenade until recently, will be the guest speaker at the opening.

Salon91 &  I AM WATER will be hosting a beach clean up on Sunday the 20th of January 2013 at 10:00 am. We would love for the Salon91 community & everyone who appreciates nature, art or the ocean to get involved. Please contact us on info@salon91.co.za if you would like to help out.

SHOES FROM CHINESE SHIPS

About ~ Shoes From Chinese Ships

Walking on Strand beach near Cape Town one comes across a proliferation of shoes and other plastic debris from China scattered along the high-tide mark. From the survivors of a Ming dynasty shipwreck integrating into Kenyan society, to the story of a giraffe being welcomed to China as unicorn in the early 15 th century, the history of shoreline arrivals and trade between Africa and China is a long and often mysterious one.
Taking the sea, the vehicle for the original contact between China and Africa, as a point of departure Shoes From Chinese Ships features both emerging and established Chinese and South African artists. The show is a conversation in painting, drawing, installation and sculpture between the intricate and increasingly complicated relationship between Africa and China. Interrupting the commercial import/export relationship and replacing it with an integrated one that allows for a more personal discourse with a faraway place, the exhibition includes a collaboration between some of the South African artists involved and students from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Living and working all around the world the artists explore the mystery, depth and intricacy of exchanges brought about by trade between these two countries throughout the centuries.

About ~ The Artists 

Working from China, South Africa, Germany and France the artists selected for Shoes From Chinese Ships are all of South African or Chinese nationality. The artists were selected for their visual and conceptual sensibilities, particularly the elements of nostalgia, fragility, mystery and displacement that tie their works together…

Students from The China Academy

Students from The China Academy of Art are participating in collaboration with the South African artists listed above. The China Academy of Art is the most influential academy of fine arts in China with the most complete range of degree offerings and programs of study. It houses a diverse pool of artistic talent, with a focus on integrating theory and practice. Combining modern technical and cultural disciplines with traditional ones, the academy encompasses fine art, architecture, film and new media.

Gabrielle Raaff

Gabrielle Raaff

Gabrielle Raaff is a painter whose subjects are subtle and nuanced, avoiding neat categorization and tending instead towards fluidity and allusion. Throughout her works she engages the relationship of the individual to the crowd in the urban landscape. The delicate conceptual space of the material qualities of ink, watercolour and oil defines her practice that consistently challenges a sense of visual surety.

Raaff’s latest body of work sees an emphasis placed on the emotive quality of the brushstroke loaded with watery paint. In some paintings the form and the landscape are brought together whereas in others the subject is severed from its context, leaving forms stranded or floating in white space.

Raaff’s visual references are photographic, drawn from local neighbourhood newspapers or her family’s pictures. One type of reference is impersonal and the other deeply nostalgic. These two states merge within the final painting where, as is characteristic of her work, the picture plane repeatedly asserts itself against the pull of illusionism. The recognisable image arises and then dissolves in the terrain of the painting. With minimal description and often very little paint, Raaff reveals just enough visual evidence to springboard an idea. Her work’s seduction lies within its suggestiveness.
