Dear Art Lovers & Collectors,

As we reach the end of another year we would like to thank you for your loyal support, patronage & enthusiasm.

According to our annual tradition, 2015 concludes with a salon-style exhibition featuring accessible, affordable artwork across a broad range of mediums by some of Salon Ninety One’s favourite emerging and established local creatives. The exhibition is scheduled to run until the last week of January 2016. Artworks will be rotated regularly & after the opening day, works may be taken home on the day of purchase, so come treat yourself & your loved ones!

This year we will be supporting The Bookery (www.thebookery.org.za). The gallery & artists will be donating 10% of all sales towards building a library & running a creative workshop with the kids at Usasazo Secondary School in Khayelitsha. Everyone is invited to donate books – specifically Xhosa & Afrikaans language, as well as Art-related books.

Please join us on Saturday the 5th of December from 11am until 3pm for our final exhibition of 2015. It is going to be a festive day of STELLAR art, sweet treats by the lovely artist/baker Alice Toich, beer by Leopold7 and so much more…

Group Show – Various Media – Emerging Artists – Salon91

Artists have been challenged by the gallery to create anew / submit a masterpiece that they believe to be a truly once-off original, successful, archetypal example of their practice, which answers to the theme and title phrase ‘One in a Million’. Each artist will only submit one piece. The artists have really let their imaginations run wild with interpretations ranging from ideas around authenticity, rarity, preciousness, love, the night sky, fleeting moments, intricacy, endangered species, statistics & formulas, to the use of sparkly materials / precious metals within their work. Viewers will be presented with what could essentially be a one-in-a-million opportunity to collect a seminal work by an emerging artist.

The exhibition will open on the 26th of June at 18h30.
‘One in a Million’ will feature one work per artist.
Expect to see sculpture, painting, drawing, typography, digitally created works & more …Not to be missed!

“The Karoo is like a Kaleidoscope, it is ever changing in colour, shape and form”

The Karoo is an inexhaustable supply of inspiration for Lizelle Kruger. A place of kado’tjies (gifts), family history, identity and natural beauty. Her oils on canvas and found objects, large-scale pastels, mixed media and sculptural installations are rich in symbolism and relate to her identity as an Afrikaner woman.

Kruger works from her studio in Cape Town, but takes regular pilgrimages to the Karoo to find new subject matter. With her camera, she captures her models, structures, objects, the light and the landscape in great detail. She uses her photographs as source material for her paintings, often physically pasting together & cropping composite images in order to arrive at the perfect composition from which to start painting.

Lizelle’s current body of work is centred around the Sutherland and Merweville areas, the Tanqua Karoo & The Koup. The artist finds her inspiration on the farms of her late grandfather, where she is constantly uncovering poignant artifacts of a lifetime ago – often rusted and weathered, for the artist, these objects represent the perfect metaphor for the fragile and transient nature of life in these harsh surroundings. The traditional Voortrekker bonnet, which appears in many of her works is a particular feature of her exploration of female identity and culturally prescribed gender roles. These explorations are always linked to the land – that fertile, timeless and demanding mother of our daily needs.
